Wrinkles, Discolored Skin, And Scars…Oh My!

HOW A CHEMICAL PEEL CAN HELP THE LOOK AND FEEL OF YOUR SKIN

The world of beauty can be intimidating. There are endless products and peels and treatments to choose from and determining what suits your needs is overwhelming. A good chemical peel is, in fact, easy to add to your beauty routine whether done alone or combined with other cosmetic procedures.

In short, a chemical peel is a type of facial that is intended to remove the outermost layer of your skin utilizing a chemical solution to resurface the skin. The peel will remove the top layers of skin so that it can grow back healthier and smoother. A chemical peel can improve skin texture and tone with results being more visible after multiple treatments and over time.

It is recommended that you wait at least four weeks between each peel to allow your skin to heal. It is not uncommon to experience some irritation, redness, swelling, and/or scabbing; hyperpigmentation can also occur if proper post care is not followed.

Some people can experience breakouts after a chemical peel so it is imperative to moisturize adequately to help recovery.

Benefits of a Chemical Peel

There are many, but the most common benefits include improvement of:

  • Acne

  • Pigment

  • Appearance of scars

What can I expect at my appointment?

During the appointment you will get a cleanse and exfoliation. The peel will be applied with two to three coats depending on skin tolerance. Once it’s dry, sunscreen and moisturizer are applied. There are many options for chemical peel products, we use the Jessner peel and the Vivier peel by Vivier. It is a pharmaceutical grade peel that consistently produces visible results. Do your research and ensure that the product your practitioner uses is medical grade and Health Canada approved. Watch for yourself below:

What's the protocol after a Chemical Peel? Can I wash my face? Exfoliate? Shower?!

Post care depends on the peel being used. Some are self neutralizing and can be left on until the next day. After that, washing your face with warm water, a gentle cleanser and moisturizing is key. Sunscreen is also extremely important as healing takes place. Showering is fine the day after and you can use a retinol and other exfoliants after a week.

When you choose the right practitioner with the right product you will love the results from a chemical peel. Don’t be afraid to try something new, it could literally change the way you look at yourself.
